International Women’s Day

“Women who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion”

This month holds profound significance for me as I align with the national theme, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion,” echoing the very essence of my mission at Jennifer Kalina Ministries (JKM), “Connecting souls, overcoming barriers & healing wounds together through Christ.”

As a deaf woman balancing various roles – from a follower of Jesus to a devoted mother and executive director – and having overcome significant challenges, including childhood adversity, I deeply understand the importance of advocating our rights. At JKM, my passion lies in fostering a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. My own journey through adversity has further reinforced the significance of honoring our identities and standing up for our rights.

A few years ago, I had the privilege of speaking at a Women’s Rally, where I addressed the issue of Deaf rights and inclusion. This experience left a profound impact on me, solidifying my commitment to advocacy work. The disparities faced by the Deaf community, including limited access to mental health services and religious resources, deeply troubles me. My personal experiences, including struggles during my high school years and battles with divorce, sexual abuse, and mental health, have fueled my determination to fight for equity and inclusion.

Last year, during a trip to Jamaica with my church’s pastoral team, I received a powerful message from God urging me to advocate for the rights of Deaf children. This divine calling reaffirmed my purpose, and I am resolutely committed to advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion with His guidance.

Just last month, I had the privilege of visiting the Capitol in Des Moines, IA. With my team, where we engaged with legislators to advance our pursuit of justice. Our primary focus was on securing funding and advancing equity and inclusion initiatives across the board. Donning red t-shirts emblazoned with our cause, we initiated meaningful conversations with legislators about our organization and the issues we were championing.

As March unfolds, I am reminded of this verse, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” Exodus 12:2. This verse inspires me to reflect, celebrate, empower, and uplift all women, God’s children. Like the blossoming flowers and vibrant green grass after a cold winter, this season signifies renewal and growth, reminding me of our resilience and capacity to evolve into the individuals God intends us to be.

Dear Friends, in whatever battles you face, please remember that you are not alone. As a united community, with the help of God’s strength, wisdom, and guidance, we will persist in our fight for equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Let us take comfort in the words of Psalm 146:6, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” With His unwavering support, I am steadfast in my commitment to advancing the cause of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
